Range Buying Guide

A Range Buying Guide To Find The Best Range for Your Kitchen

The Greatest Appliances Kitchen Range Buying Guide shares all you need to know to make an intelligent decision before buying your next range for your kitchen.

Our Range Buying Guide will teach you that you can look anywhere in the kitchen and you will find a real workhorse. It’s the range. If you have one that is also stylish, it is most likely also the centerpiece of your kitchen. The biggest-sellers on the market are the smoothtop ranges, however, you might have more variety than ever, which includes double-oven ranges for those of us that like to stay busy in the kitchen.

You can also opt for a cooktop or a wall oven combo but those two are typically going to cost you more than what you would spend on a traditional range. If you already know all about kitchen ranges and just want to find the best one to meet for your needs, be sure to check out our Range Reviews. You should also check out all of our Appliance Buying Guides.

At Greatest Appliances we purchase every range we review. Therefore, we are very aware of how it feels to spend a lot of money for a professional-style range. However, it’s important to know that we do not rank them on style, that’s a personal preference, but we do rank them on how fast they deliver heat to the cooktop, self-cleaning, simmering, broiling, and baking. We do this consistently with all of the ranges we review.

Considerations For You

The range that is the most popular and most simple to install are Freestanding Ranges. Normally you will find the oven control panel located on the back panel, up above the surface of the cooktop. To get a custom built-in appearance, you should consider slide-in ranges as they can slide between the surrounding cabinetry easily. There is no back panel, showcasing your backsplash, and the oven controls are located on the range front.

You will find that the majority of gas and electric ranges have a width of 30-inches. If you purchase a pro-style range, your range will be 36-inches wide or greater. We’ve reviewed both 36-inch and 30-inch ranges. They’re huge on style, however, they weren’t the best-performing ranges that we’ve conduct reviews on. These days, however, even regular, conventional ranges come equipped with rugged grates, beefy knobs, stainless trim, and style at a much cheaper price.

When you find yourself hosting a group of people, having an oven with a lot of room comes in handy. We took measurements of usable oven space, the area in the oven where you’re actually able to make use of it, and you will find those ratings under capacity ratings. The biggest ovens we reviewed were almost 4 cubic feet, while the smallest were just a tad more than 2 cubic feet.

Our Range Buying Guide Helps You Find Out Which Type Is Best For Your Needs?

You will find 3 basic types of ranges and that is based on the type of energy source the range uses: gas, electric, and dual-fuel, which couples a gas cooktop with an electric oven. Each have their own advantages.

image of frigidaire smoothtop kitchen rangeElectric Smoothtop

The most popular selection nowadays is the electric smoothtop range. Each of the models in our reviews provide a minimum of one high-powered burner. The majority of them also provide expandable dual or triple elements, allowing you to switch from a small, low-powered element to a large, high-powered element within it. A number of the models also provide an element in the center of the range for the sole purpose of keeping side dishes warm.

It’s important to note that residual heat causes higher temperatures to linger for a few minutes when you lower the temperature.

Electric Induction

Using magnetic coils beneath a ceramic glass surface, electric ranges with an induction cooktop can generate heat directly to the pan quickly, which results in precise control and simmering.

In order for induction to work, magnetic cookware is essential. Use a magnet on the bottom of your pots and pans and, if the magnet sticks strongly to the bottom, the cookware will work properly with an induction cooktop. There is some stainless-steel cookware that’ll work but there is also some that will not.

image of GE gas rangeA lot of people have a preference for cooking with gas. We get that. Being able to see the flame makes it more simple to judge how much heat you’re getting, be able to get a feel for the temperature, and you don’t have to worry about residual heat when you move from a high temperature to a lower setting.

Burner capacity is measured in British Thermal Units (known better as BTUs) per hour. The majority of gas ranges come with 4 burners, in 3 different sizes. One or two large burners, one or two medium burners, and a small one. There are, however, a number of models that provide a fifth burner and do not have any center space available. Again, this is a personal preference, considering if you will ever need five burners.

One of the best things about gas ranges is the response time. When compared to an electric smoothtop, the gas range response time is unbeatable. Whenever you lower your heat level, the cookware and the food therein experience that reduction almost instantly. And, unlike an electric range, a gas model does not rely on electricity to operate. So you can cook food in the event of a power outage.

Our Range Buying Guide Lists the Features to Take Into Consideration

Control Lockout

It allows you to turn off the oven controls. We suggest it if the electronic-oven control panel is on the front of the range, as opposed to being located on the back panel, particularly if there are little kids in the home.

Double Ovens

The double oven allows you to cook two separate items, in two separate cavities at different temperatures. So you can roast a turkey in one while baking a cake in the other…at the same time. There are some ranges that couple a larger oven on the bottom with a smaller one on top and then there are some that have ovens that are of identical size. It’s important to note that there is not a storage drawer and normally the convection feature is in the bottom oven, however there are some that have convection in each oven.

Expandable Elements, Bridge, and Oval Burner

On gas range cooktops, you will find oval burners to accommodate elongated pans and griddles. A number of electric range cooktops provide an elongated bridge element, spanning two burners, in order to fit griddles or other various oddly-shaped cookware. Many electric radiant and induction smoothtops supply an expandable burner that lets you select the burner size to best match the diameter of the pot or pan.

Hot-Surface Warning Lights

This light alerts you whenever an element is hot and is very useful on electric radiant smoothtop ranges. Some models provide an alert light for all burners, others only provide one.

Several of the higher-priced ranges utilize one or more fans, which circulates hot air throughout the oven. A number of ovens, typically of the electric variety, have an extra convection heating element. Convection normally decreases required cooking time, ideally for food such as large roasts.

Variable Broil

The majority of electric and gas ovens provide this feature. Variable broil offers you adjustable settings for foods that have to cook either slower or faster.

Time/Delayed Start

This allows you to set a time for the electric or gas oven to begin and end the cooking cycle. Although this feature is not really too smart to focus on, you should never leave an oven unattended.

Stainless Steel Ranges: Our Range Buying Guide Takes A Quick Look

One of the best things you can do to make your kitchen more modern and attractive is to add a beautiful stainless steel kitchen range.  A stainless steel stove is state-of-the-art and will put your kitchen right up there with the best of them!  Stainless steel is durable, scratch resistant and a wonderful way to make your stove something that you will use forever with confidence and pride.  You will never regret making the decision to enhance your cooking adventures by using a bright and beautiful stainless steel appliance.

Stainless steel stoves come in both commercial and home-use models.  They can be electric, propane or gas and come with many different options, depending on the brand that you buy.  Most have lifetime guarantees on many of their components.  These stoves generally have such features as built in cooking grates, simmer options on the stove’s burners, easy to use spark ignition (with match ignition available when the power is out) and an oven that keeps the temperature even throughout the entire cooking process.  Many models have separate storage compartments for kitchen utensils and tools and have a completely separate compartment for broiling.

Stainless Durability Is Priceless

Stoves made of stainless steel are durable pieces of kitchen equipment.  Technically, stainless steel is a steel alloy that is approximately 11% chromium by mass.  It is a great component for kitchen ranges because it does not corrode (or rust) and is very stain-resistant.  The chromium content of the steel is what prevents rust from occurring.  Kitchen ranges made of stainless steel come in many different “grades” of steel.  The better the grade, the more expensive the stove is and the longer it will last.

A stainless steel kitchen range is what all seasoned chefs want so that they can create only the best foods and meals around.  They know that stainless steel will give them the service they want and the cooking reliability they need for many years to come.  Not only will they be able to depend that their foods will be beautiful and delicious, they won’t need to spend hours cleaning up afterwards.  The beauty of stainless steel is that it is easy to maintain.

The company actually started out in the early 1900’s as a refrigerator manufacturer and was founded by a man named Alfred Mellowes.  At first the fledgling company didn’t do very well because it simply took too long to construct each refrigerator.  The company was taken over by William C. Durant in 1919 and under his direction, it adopted mass-production techniques.  As the refrigerators became more affordable to the American public, the company started adding other appliances such as air conditioners and ice-cream makers.

More Information About Frigidaire

It wasn’t until 1932 that Frigidaire introduced larger household appliances such as dryers, washers, ovens and ranges.  During the 1950’s, the company’s designers started looking closing at the kitchens of the day and knew that more streamlined and attractive appliances were needed.  This is the time that appliances were made in matching colors so that color-groupings could be placed together.

Frigidaire has led the industry in providing excellent household appliances, including its top-of-the-line ranges.  Its original company motto was “Here Today.  Here Tomorrow” which gave consumers the peace of mind that their Frigidaire would last them for many, many years.  Frigidaire eventually became part of the Electrolux family and since 1991 many excellent ranges have been produced.  Electrolux even changed the motto for Frigidaire to say “Frigidaire Company.  Creating a Better Tomorrow!”

A Solid History

As a consumer, you won’t ever go wrong by purchasing a fine Frigidaire range.  It has many years of strong backing and commitment for excellence.  Its ranges are reasonably priced and extremely energy efficient.  The company is here to create a better tomorrow for today’s homemakers.  It is one of the most desirable kitchen appliances around and the American public continues to rely on its dependability and functionality.

The Maytag Company has been around for a very long time and comes with quite a unique history.  It has grown over the years to be one of the most well-known and reliable kitchen appliance companies in the world.  Like most companies, it started out small and was founded by someone who was relatively unknown but had a vision for a more usable and attractive kitchen for homemakers.  Today’s Maytag kitchen ranges and other kitchen appliances are something that millions of people have had in their homes for many, many years.

The Maytag Company started out very small and was focused on just a small region in the state of Iowa.  In the early 1890’s, Frederick Louis Maytag and his two brothers started a small company that focused on manufacturing farm machinery.  One of the first things that came out of this new company was a threshing machine used for harvesting Iowa crops.

Our Range Buying Guide Reveals More About Maytag

By 1902, the Maytag brothers saw that there were areas in the farmers’ homes that needed to be upgraded also.  So, they invented their first home washing machine and introduced to the farmers of Iowa.  By 1940, a Maytag grandson, Fred Maytag II, assumed leadership of the business after Frederick Louis Maytag died.

The new Maytag president was involved in aviation endeavors during WWII but also saw a need for other home appliances in addition to washing machines.  By 1946, Maytag added ranges and refrigerators to their line of home kitchen appliances.    However, the stove business was discontinued in 1955 and the refrigerator business in 1960.  The Maytag Company then introduced portable kitchen dishwashers and garbage disposals and focused on them for awhile.

The Maytag kitchen range then reappeared in 1982.  The company realized that it was important to provide the American public with a wide variety of kitchen appliances, not just dishwashers.  So, it introduced new gas and electric ranges and ovens as well as microwave ovens and built-in cook tops.  Maytag has continued to be one of the most popular kitchen appliance companies in America and throughout the world despite its humble beginnings.

Our Range Buying Guide Reveals More About Viking

The company was first established by Fred Carl, Jr.  His background was in building contracting and while attending college had to work part-time in the construction business.  This is where he saw the importance of good kitchen design.  His ideas were widely accepted and he started setting up showrooms displaying eye-appealing and highly durable kitchens.  He was able to visualize and set up home kitchens that formerly were found only in professional restaurant establishments.

In 1980, Carl, Jr. and his wife decided that they needed to update their own kitchen.  They wanted to add a kitchen range that was large and similar to that found in commercial-grade kitchens.  However, these types of stoves were illegal in some areas because of fire hazards and so on.  They also required specialized installation such as special gas lines and venting systems.  Carl, Jr. saw an opportunity to design a commercial-grade stove that would be acceptable in residential homes.

It only took Carl, Jr. a few months to come up with the first Viking kitchen range.  This fledgling stove combined the features of a standard residential stove with the professional features of a commercial stove.  It performed remarkably well and spiked the interest of many people throughout the United States.  The rest is history:  The Viking Company today has grown to be one of the most important kitchen appliance manufacturers in the world.
